WASHING THE OCEANS

ORC Europeans has partnered up with Origin by Ocean, a Finnish technology and materials innovation company that rids the oceans of harmful algae and turns it into everyday goods.

Together with Origin by Ocean we are providing all the washing agents to the harbour and the showers and introducing to our visitors the Meri [Ocean] cosmetics range, that is the first in the world to use chemical ingredients developed by Origin by Ocean that use molecules from seaweeds instead of oil-based chemical products.

"Our societies are heavily dependent on oil, with around 80% of the products we use every day containing oil in various forms. Even if we don't actively think about it, our everyday choices involve a huge amount of oil, a non-renewable resource. Algae can be used to replace oil, while reducing nutrient pollution in the oceans and reducing the carbon footprint of products," says Mari Granström, CEO and founder of Origin by Ocean.

Together with Origin by Ocean we also want to remind sailors and all visitors of the ways of reducing the strain we put on our oceans by using washing agents that end up directly in to the sea. The most important thing is that when ever possible, make us of sewage systems on land and limit the use of washing agents that end up in the oceans.

  • When cleaning your boat, washing dishes or cleaning yourself, it is important to consider the environmental impact of different washing agents and where the resulting greywater ends up.

  • When cleaning the boat only environmentally-friendly, phosphate-free washing agents are allowed in the race harbour. Phosphates accelerate the eutrophication of waterways.

  • Make use of dishwashing facilities located on land washing the dishes aboard your boat is not allowed.

  • Take use of the environmental friendly soaps and washing agents that we have provided in the showers and the laundry room and leave extra luggage home!

You can even get your own Meri products and their refills from Ole Hyvä Luonnontuote.
